You may be familiar with the law of attraction, but can you put into practice what it teaches? The law of attraction is the belief that people can bring positive or negative experiences into their lives by focusing on positive or negative thoughts. The idea is not as difficult or magical as one might think. There’s been a lot more information about this topic recently, and many people struggle when trying their best to set goals. I can attest to getting very distracted myself!

Many of us get distracted or frustrated when nothing productive manifests as we intended. We either worry about possible adverse outcomes or eventually give up on ourselves completely. We may be so wrapped up in our doubts that any hopes for success never seem to happen. I feel that in this age of “instant” information via digital and other technology, we are generally impatient beings!

Manifesting what you want in life can be a challenge. It isn’t easy to focus and make decisions when you don’t know what you want. This has been my problem for some reason. Maybe you know exactly what you want, and that’s great!

The law of attraction, in simple terms, says if you want something badly enough, it will happen. While this may sound like wishful thinking, there is some science to back up the law of attraction. Studies have shown that our thoughts and our emotions influence our actions. So it stands to reason that if we focus our thoughts on what we want, we’ll be more likely to take steps leading us to get it. Now, let’s figure out what we want!

Ways to understand what you want

I have to be upfront and honest. I tend to bounce around with this problem. What the heck do I want? Some days I dream about exotic vacations or other “material” items of luxury. Other times, I feel too shallow with that! The universe doesn’t care if you want diamonds or a career as a guru. Those choices are for you to make. Your thoughts and steps toward your goals are the cogs working behind the scenes.

I have found some mindfulness exercises that have helped me discover my desires.

  1. Meditation with intention: Practice a 3–5 minute meditation each day. Before you start, ask the universe for guidance. “Please help me focus on what I truly desire. I want many things, but I would like to focus on those for my highest good.”
  2. Journaling with quick, spontaneous lists of goals, desires, etc.: This is where you don’t think or contemplate. Just write. Then rate them from 1–10 in importance. Let this be of emotional significance. What gives you the most joy? After ranking them put them in order of importance. Read the list and contemplate the desired goals. What type of feelings comes up? Do you get a picture in your mind? You may be surprised that what you thought you selected is not on the top of the list!
  3. Go down memory lane: Think about what you used to dream about when you were a kid. What were some of the activities that gave you joy? What places did you go to? Look at old photographs to bring out the inner child. Engage in an activity that you haven’t done in years. What does this feel like? It may help you understand that joy is in the doing.
  4. Catch yourself when you are thinking negatively or you are depressed. This is where the vibration of negative thinking slows down the progress of manifestation and the ability to focus! Get happy! I know easier said than done! Watch funny videos, read an inspiring book or go out into nature and play!

How to Use the Law of Attraction

As stated above, get clear on what you want. Too often, people try to manifest multiple things at once, which only leads to confusion and frustration. For example, it may be challenging to focus on both simultaneously if you’re trying to manifest a new job and relationship. Trying to manifest two completely different things can also lead to self-doubt and feelings of unworthiness.

So instead of trying to manifest multiple things at once, focus on one thing at a time. Visualize what you want in as much detail as possible and feel the emotions of having it in your life. The more specific and clear you are on what you want, the better your chance of attracting it into your life.

Another essential task in using the law of attraction is taking action toward your goal. Just visualizing what you want isn’t enough — you also need to take steps toward making it a reality. For example, if your goal is to get a new job- send out resumes, go on interviews, and network. Taking action will not only help you achieve your goal, but it will also help increase your motivation and confidence along the way. Doubts are bound to creep up from time to time but remind yourself that these are just temporary setbacks on the road to achieving your goal.

Four main steps for making the law of attraction work for you

1) Get clear about what you want: The first step is to get clear about what you want to achieve. What do you want your life to look like? What kind of career do you want? How much money do you want to earn? Be as specific as possible in your visualization, and write down your goals so you can refer back to them frequently.

2) Set your intention: Once you know what you want, it’s time to set your choice and begin visualizing your goal regularly. A great way to do this is by meditating or doing other relaxation techniques, such as yoga, to clear your mind and focus solely on your goal. Use your imagination and “feel” as if you already possess your goal.

3) Take action toward your goal: For the law of attraction to work, you also need to take physical steps toward your goal. This might mean signing up for classes if you want a new career, Researching companies if you want a new job, or investing in skills courses to earn more money. Taking action steps will help increase the chances of achieving your goal because it shows the universe that you’re serious about making it happen.

4) Be patient: Remember to be patient and trust that the universe will deliver what you’ve asked for in perfect timing. Trying too hard to manifest something will only lead to frustration, so sit back, relax, and let the law of attraction do its thing!
